Vance Detention Center Releases
The Vance County Detention Center is the county jail, not a North Carolina Department of Adult Correction prison. A person may walk out under bond or another pretrial order, leave after dismissal, complete a jail term, or receive credit for time served. Those are possible community-release paths. The person can also leave Vance custody through a transfer to NCDAC, another county jail, federal custody, immigration custody, court, or medical care. A transfer ends one custodian's hold but does not mean the person is free.
The release destination therefore matters as much as the date. Ask whether the event was a community discharge or an agency handoff. For a community exit, the facility's status confirmation and the Sheriff's admission, booking, or release record are the primary sources. For a transfer, the Vance record should identify the receiving agency when that fact is public. Continue the search in the receiving system rather than describing the event as a full release.
A name leaving Vance custody can mean release, transfer, court movement, or another lawful change. Confirm the destination before drawing a conclusion.
Confirm Vance Jail Release Records
No official Vance County jail roster, release log, or archive was located on the Sheriff's current website. That makes a direct check the first step. - Call the detention center and ask whether the person is currently held, released to the community, or transferred.
- Ask for the actual date and time of the custody change. A date without an event type is incomplete.

- When the answer identifies another custodian, use that agency's locator and confirm admission there.
- Compare the county record with the court case when the legal basis for release is important.
NC SAVAN, also called VINELink, adds a useful notification channel for an individual. It can report an event sent by a participating jail, but the event still needs agency and transfer context. NCDAC's offender search does not contain a routine Vance jail-only stay. It becomes relevant only when the person entered state prison or community supervision.

A narrow request is easier to process. Give the full name, approximate booking period, and any booking or case number already known. Ask for the booking or admission number, arresting and holding agencies, actual release date and time, release authority, bond disposition, receiving agency, and hold or detainer disposition. Request electronic delivery and an itemized estimate before extensive work begins.

North Carolina law allows ordinary copy charges based on actual cost and may permit a special service charge for extensive use. The Sheriff has not published a Vance-specific amount for this record. Some fields may not exist, may be withheld, or may be kept in a different record system. The custodian should make that decision, not an unofficial listing.
Vance Custody Types Explained
The Vance County Sheriff's Office operates the detention center for local custody. People held there may be awaiting court action or serving a jail sentence. The facility is distinct from NCDAC, which manages state prisoners and statewide probation, parole, and post-release supervision. A court disposition can explain why a judge authorized release, imposed a sentence, or dismissed a charge. It does not always show the moment a person crossed the facility door. The jail record documents the physical custody event. These records should be read together when exact timing and legal authority both matter.
Vance Transfer Search Paths
A transfer to state prison should lead to the NCDAC Offender Public Information Search. Search by offender number when possible, or compare name and date-of-birth fields. An Active Inmate status means the person did not leave state custody. Later, an Actual Release Date plus the status fields can confirm a state-prison exit. The separate monthly NCDAC Inmate Release Search is a state list, not a Vance County Detention Center release feed.
If another county received the person, ask Vance for the agency name and search that custodian. NC SAVAN can help bridge county systems. A federal transfer may eventually appear in the BOP locator, though a person held for the U.S. Marshals Service may not yet be a BOP prisoner. If ICE accepted custody, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator and contact the displayed facility. An unsuccessful federal search alone does not prove release.

A date-only result may refer to data entry, legal effect, transfer, or physical release. Ask specifically for the actual release date and time from the detention center when door time matters.
Vance Jail Replacement Proposal
Local reporting in June 2026 described preliminary plans for a replacement jail of roughly 300 beds at a cost above $70 million after facility problems and an escape. That proposal provides important local context, but it is not an operating detention site. It does not belong in the Vance County facility list, and no release should be routed to a proposed building.
The current official contact remains the Vance County Detention Center on Breckenridge Street. Before traveling, sending records correspondence, or arranging a pickup, verify the active address and instructions through the Sheriff's official website. Plans, construction schedules, and operations can change.

Vance Release Record Limits
The Sheriff does not publish an online retention promise for local jail releases. That is different from NCDAC's statewide historical search, which reaches back to 1972 but excludes ordinary county-jail-only stays. VINELink is an event and notification system, not a permanent case archive. Court records may last longer, yet sealed or expunged material will not remain publicly available in the usual way.
North Carolina Chapter 132 governs public-record access and includes special rules for law-enforcement records. A request may produce records, a partial response, a lawful withholding explanation, or a statement that the requested item does not exist. Do not convert a blank portal page into a claim that no custody event occurred. Direct the question to the office that created the record.
When sources conflict, check whether they describe different systems. The Sheriff may show transfer out of Vance on one date, NCDAC may show state admission next, and a court file may show the order that caused the move. Those entries can all be accurate. A clear account names each custodian and event in sequence.
